Muscat, Oman –OQ Gas Networks SAOG (OQGN), the exclusive transporter and operator of the Sultanate of Oman’s natural gas transmission network, has won the Huawei Oil & Gas Industry Best Joint Innovation Award for its AI-powered Smart Intrusion Detection System (IDS), developed in collaboration with Huawei.

The system integrates fiber optic sensing and AI-enabled cameras to provide 24/7 real-time monitoring across high-risk pipeline Right-of-Way (RoW) areas. During the Proof-of-Concept phase conducted in Q3 2025, the solution achieved High detection accuracy across monitored segments, improved RoW security by up to 80%, reduced false alarms, and significantly minimized manual inspection workloads. Following its success, OQGN is implementing a phased rollout across the network.

The award-winning initiative forms part of OQGN’s broader 2025 Innovation Program, which includes advanced Leak Detection & Repair (LDAR) technologies to reduce methane emissions, VR-based training solutions to enhance workforce safety and competency, and tethered and BVLOS drone technologies to strengthen emergency response and large-scale pipeline monitoring.

Commenting on the achievement, Eng. Mansoor bin Ali Al Abdali, OQGN CEO, said: “This award highlights OQGN’s commitment to innovation and digital transformation in safeguarding our critical energy infrastructure. By leveraging advanced AI technology, we are moving towards a smarter, more proactive approach to pipeline security, setting a benchmark for operational excellence in the region.”

This achievement further reinforces OQGN’s position as a regional leader in gas transmission, advancing digital transformation and operational excellence to support the Sultanate of Oman’s long-term energy security and sustainable growth.
